Sketches of fish, shellfish, and birds by Keigetsu Matsubayashi. This work offers a glimpse into the artist's humble approach to creation. It also holds significant value as a reference document, featuring dates and notes inscribed directly on the paper.
The artist, Keigetsu Matsubayashi, was a leading figure who contributed greatly to the development of modern Nanga painting, and received the Order of Culture, among other awards.
A Japanese-style painter. He moved to Tokyo in 1893 to study under Noguchi Yūkoku, and after his teacher's death, he honed his artistic skills through self-study. He married the female painter Matsubayashi Setsutei and adopted the surname Matsubayashi; the couple played active roles in the Japan Art Association during the late Meiji era. He served as a juror for the Nihon Gakai (Japan Painting Society) and the Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition) in 1919, became a member of the Imperial Art Academy in 1937, and was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1944. After World War II, he dedicated himself to the revival of the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). Throughout his career, he upheld the orthodox traditions of *Nanga* (Southern School painting) and demonstrated exceptional ink-wash techniques, establishing himself as a leading figure in modern *Nanga*. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 1958.
