Box inscription by Kunii Ouyou (1867-1923 , 国井応陽) : Japanese-style painter of the Maruyama School who was active from the Meiji through the Taisho periods. As a direct descendant—specifically, the sixth-generation descendant—of the Edo-period artist Maruyama Okyo, he carried on the Maruyama School's traditional aesthetic of realism into the modern era.
A series of paintings by Matsumura Keibun depicting the twelve months of the year, featuring flowers and birds.It features an elegant brushwork characteristic of Matsumura Keibun, an artist renowned for his paintings of flowers and birds.
[Matsumura Keibun] 1779～1843. A painter active during the late Edo period. He resided in the Shijo district of Kyoto and served as an attendant to the Myohoin-no-miya (a high-ranking imperial prince and head of the Myohoin Temple). He studied painting under his older brother, Matsumura Gekkei; by further refining that style, he produced numerous elegant and refined paintings of flowers and birds. His works were cherished by the citizens of Kyoto in the 19th century, and he played a pivotal role in the flourishing and development of the Shijo school following his brother's death. Representative works include *Scroll of Flowers and Vegetables* (Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts), *Summer Shore with Reeds and Fish* (Itsuo Art Museum, Ikeda City), and *Winnowing Bamboo* (Kosetsu Museum of Art, Kobe City).
