This artwork combines a portrait of Sugawara no Michizane, who has been revered since ancient times as the god of learning, with an ancient Buddhist scripture manuscript (Sanuki-gire).
The Sanuki-gire is a copy of the Konkōmyō Saishōō-kyō (Golden Light Sutra) believed to have been transcribed in the late Nara to early Heian period, and it is likely that the name was combined with the attributed author, Sugawara no Michizane.
