1865–1940. A medical historian and medical scientist active from the Meiji era through the early Showa era. Born on May 11, 1865 (the 11th day of the 5th month, first year of Keio). After studying in Germany, he became the chief of internal medicine at the Nihonbashi Nakasu Yojoin clinic in Tokyo. Later, he served as the director of the Nakayama Cultural Research Institute. He founded organizations such as the Japan Child Research Association and the Japanese Society for the History of Medicine. In 1912 (the first year of Taisho), he received the Imperial Academy Prize for his work *History of Japanese Medicine* (Nihon Igakushi). In his later years, he engaged in religious activities and founded the Shoshin Kyokai. He passed away on November 6, 1940, at the age of 76. A native of Aki (Hiroshima Prefecture), he graduated from the Hiroshima Medical School. His art name was Shicho. His collection of books was donated to Kyoto University and Keio University.
