This poem was written by Emperor Yoko in response to the theme "Matsureki Nen" (Pine Tree Years) for the New Year's Imperial Poetry Reading Ceremony in January of Tensho 3 (1575), and was revised by Sanjonishi Saneki, a poet and court noble of the late Muromachi period who excelled in waka poetry.
