This is a stylish scroll mounting made from fine cloth by the previous owner.
This is a classic stepdaughter tale in which the intelligent and beautiful princess is toyed with by her stepmother, but grows up as the daughter of a fisherman. Her wit and education help her overcome the difficulties of the imperial court and bring about a happy ending.
《Synopsis》
After the death of his wife (the princess's biological mother), Horikawa Chunagon, the protagonist's father, married his second wife, Kita no Mandokoro, three years later. Upon his arrival, the princess, an orphaned child of his first wife, moved into Tainoya, where she was subsequently referred to as Tainoya no Himegimi. This story is also known as "Tainoya Hime Monogatari" (Tainoya Princess Tale) after the name of her room.
The princess excelled in the koto and biwa, and grew up beautiful. However, her mother's illness and early death left her depressed, and she spent her days holed up in her room mourning her mother. His second wife had a daughter, one year older than the protagonist's daughter, and on the surface, life seemed peaceful. However, when her father, the Chunagon, became Dazai no Sochi (Grand Marshal of the Dazai), the family moved to Tsukushi Province. During their sea journey, they anchored at Akashi Bay for around seven days, and on the night before their departure the next morning, their stepmother plotted to have Tainoyahime drowned, but a servant who was unable to kill her left her on a rock in the sea and abandoned her. The princess was saved by a fisherman passing by in a boat, and they ended up living in the fisherman and his wife's cave in Akashi Bay.
Meanwhile, the Chunagon and others assumed the princess had drowned, and her fiancé, Fourth Rank Major General, was so heartbroken that he became a monk. Around the time of the first and third anniversaries of her death, a prince named Nii no Chujo passed by Akashi Bay on his way back from a hot spring cure, fell in love with the princess, and took her back to the capital. When Nii no Chujo's mother, Kita no Mandokoro, found out that her son was favoring the fisherman's child, she called the princess in to ridicule her. However, contrary to her expectations, the princess's beauty and high level of education were so striking that those around her could not help but be amazed. The princess, who officially became his wife, gave birth to a child with the general, and the family reached the height of prosperity and glory.
