Published:"Wakakaishisyusei" ,Edited by Kyusojin Hitaku 久曾神昇, 2005, Kyuko Shoin 汲古書院

Collection from Kyusojin Hitaku (1909-2012,久曾神昇)

A waka poem kaishi (paper scroll) from a Horaku waka gathering at Kasuga Shrine in Nara. They are known as "Kasuga kaishi." The event was held by Shinto priests and monks from Nara, including Kasuga Shrine, Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine, Kofuku-ji Temple, and Todai-ji Temple.

On the back of the paper remain ink marks from a copy of the Manyoshu that was later copied by Nakatomi Sukesada (1198-1269), the chief priest of Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine and one of the poets. The line visible in the center of the paper is the crease that was made when the Manyoshu was folded into a pocket-bound booklet when it was copied. This is known as the "Kasugabon Manyoshu" and occupies an important position in the history of research into the subject. This is a valuable work that conveys the prosperity of the poetry world that arose in Nara.

They are housed in the Nara National Museum and the Miho Museum, among others, and a large group is also housed in the National Institute of Japanese Literature and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History, both of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties.

The handwriting is free-flowing and powerful. This work was owned by Dr. Kyusojin Hitaku, who made outstanding achievements in the field of waka poetry research.
