An illustrated local history book published in the early Edo period.Volume 1 begins in Hokkaido and follows the Oshu Kaido road to Edo. Volume 2 follows the Tokaido road from Edo to the Oi River. Volume 3 also follows the Tokaido road from Kanaya to Osaka's "Tenma Toyosaki." Volume four covers the journey from Osaka through the Seto Inland Sea to Nagasaki, Iki, and Tsushima.In addition, distances to various foreign countries are indicated, such as "From here, by sea to Karakuni (唐国,China) / 144 ri to Goryeo 高麗."
The layout is divided into upper and lower sections; the upper section contains the main text, and the lower section contains the map.The descriptions in the section include not only place names, but also the feudal lord who ruled the area, local specialties, red-light districts, legends, and more.It also contains many waka poems, giving it the feel of a collection of waka poems about famous places.The map at the bottom is in the form of a road map, focusing on the main roads.The drawings attempt to show the relative positions of place names, landmarks, and historical sites as seen from the roads, but at the same time, the topography is not consciously depicted.The painting also depicts travelers walking along the roads and people praying at shrines and temples.
