Based on the Ten Kings, these 13 Buddhas (more precisely, Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas) were conceived in Japan during the Muromachi period and are involved in the judgment of the underworld. They are also known as the Buddhas who preside over 13 memorial services (from the 7th day after death to the 33rd anniversary), and it is customary to display paintings of them, mainly on hanging scrolls, at memorial services and all kinds of Buddhist ceremonies.
The 13 Buddhas are the Buddhas who are considered to be the original forms of the Ten Kings, who are judges of the underworld, including King Yama, and the judges who preside over subsequent trials (the 7th, 13th, and 33rd anniversaries of death).
These Buddhas are said to play the role of judges in an actual court during the trial.
