This letter expresses satisfaction with the visit to Okamichi on the 8th of last month. Mikumo Kenmochi (Shinzaemon) served as the messenger. The letter is dated to Eiroku 6 (1563). On October 1st of the same year, Rokkaku Yoshisuke, the head of the Rokkaku family, executed his senior retainer, the Goto clan, and many of his retainers rebelled against this (the Kannonji Incident). Yoshisuke and his father, Shotei, both temporarily left Kannonji Castle, and Shotei sought refuge with the Mikumo clan in Koga County. The letter was likely sent during this period. The dispatch of troops to "Tainan-dono" is also thought to be related to this incident.
The former owner, Miura Shuko, after graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, worked in the Historical Materials Compilation Department, compiling historical materials from the Kamakura period. At the same time, he pioneered the study of Japanese legal history, leaving a significant mark, particularly on the study of family systems in ancient and medieval Japan. After becoming a professor at Kyoto Imperial University, he expanded his research areas to include historical methodology, socio-economic history, and Meiji history, laying the foundation for historical studies at Kyoto University.
