There are very few works from the Heian and Kamakura periods that are said to have been created by women, and among them, "Koushikire" is known as a masterpiece that represents the Heian period.
The work in our collection is introduced as the first representative masterpiece in the chapter on "Koushikire" in the great book "Kohitsugaku Taisei", which covers all waka poems. A similar work is also in the collection of the National Museum of Japan.
The light brown dyed paper has a fragrant effect, and the processing has the effect of preventing the ink from bleeding, making it possible to polish the work into a wonderful piece of calligraphy.
It is written in a free-flowing calligraphy style that moves forward with vigor and lightness, and is thought to be a work from around the end of the 11th century, when the variety of expression was increasing.
Although his handwriting is sharp, his calligraphy style is rich in variety and freedom, and can be said to be a masterpiece that truly represents the beauty of continuous writing.
