A haikai poet of the late Edo period. Commonly known as Yataro; his real name was Nobuyuki. He was a native of Kashiwabara in Shinano Province. He lost his biological mother at the age of three and was raised by a stepmother from the age of eight. At fourteen, he traveled to Edo, where he later became a disciple of Nijurokuan Chikua and studied haikai poetry. Although he spent much of his life traveling across the country on haikai pilgrimages, he returned to his hometown in his later years and established a secure position as a haikai master. However, the family life he finally achieved was marred by tragedy, including the deaths of his wife and children. His poetic style made extensive use of rustic and colloquial language, pioneering a unique approach that clearly and simply expressed the emotions of everyday life. His notable works include *Oraga Haru* (My Spring) and *Chichi no Shūen Nikki* (Diary of My Father's Final Days).
