A selection of excellent poems in the form of a poetry contest, in which one poem each from 36 poets, from Kakinomoto no Hitomaro to Nakatsukasa, is selected.
This book was transcribed by the sixth Tokugawa Shogun, Ienobu, and is painted on beautiful paper with lovely and luxurious designs of flowing water and flowers in gold and silver paint, as well as scattered colored cherry blossoms.Tokugawa Ienobu (1662-1712) was the eldest son of Tokugawa Tsunashige, the Chancellor of Kofu. He was adopted by his uncle, the fifth Shogun, Tsunayoshi, and inherited the Shogunate upon Tsunayoshi's death in 1709.
Shogun Ienobu is known for favoring Mabee Akifusa and Arai Hakuseki and for carrying out various reforms, but he was also known for being a man of great learning, and in addition to Shiraseki, he invited scholars such as Miyake Kanran and Muro Kyusu to serve as lecturers.
