【Ueda Akinari】A Japanese scholar, poet, and yomihon author in the mid-Edo period. Born in Osaka. Adopted son of paper and oil merchant Ueda Mosuke. He started out as a writer of ukiyo-zoshi (a type of Japanese story), displaying sharp and humorous satire in "Shodo Chomimi Sekenzaru" and "Seken Tsume Kageki." As a yomihon author, he took materials and methods from Chinese vernacular novels, and displayed refined tales and character development in "Ugetsu Monogatari," "Masura wo Monogatari," and "Spring Rain Monogatari," placing him at the pinnacle of his literary talent.
