Tsukiji Hotel was Japan's first full-scale hotel, which opened in 1868 (Keio 4) at the end of the Edo period. According to the London Memorandum, Edo was to be opened to foreigners on December 7, Keio 3 (January 1, 1868), and it was expected that the number of foreigners staying in Edo would increase. For this reason, British envoy Harry Parkes requested the shogunate to build a hotel, and in response, Tsukiji Hotel was built on the site of the former naval training school in Tsukiji Funaita-machi. The design was commissioned to Richard Bridgens, an American who had a civil engineering and architectural firm in the Yokohama foreign settlement. The completed hotel consisted of a two-story main building (partly three stories, with a turret) and a single-story building, with a total floor area of 1619.7 tsubo (approximately 5,354.4 m2), a width of 40.5 ken (approximately 73.6 m), a depth of 34.0 ken (approximately 61.8 m), and 102 rooms. It was equipped with flush toilets, a billiard room, shower rooms, and a bar. Spectators flocked to it every day, and over 100 types of ukiyo-e prints were made, making it a famous spot in Edo/Tokyo. It was burned down in the Great Ginza Fire that broke out on February 26, 1872 (April 3, 1872) and reduced to ashes. Its lifespan was just under four years.
