Shakyamuni Buddha is placed in the center of the canvas, with Samantabhadra Bodhisattva riding an elephant and Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion on either side, surrounded by a crowded field of 16 good deities. At the bottom of the canvas, closest to the viewer, stands Xuanzang, who traveled far to India to bring back Buddhist scriptures to China, facing his guardian deity, the Great General Shastra. In particular, it was used as the principal image in a Buddhist memorial service called Daihannya-e, and was painted with the aim of praying for the protection of the nation and the elimination of disasters and the bringing of good fortune.
Examples of this work featuring Master Zendo are rare, as they are not found in other works. However, the possibility of a later addition cannot be ruled out and requires further investigation. While the original paper shows signs of wear due to age, this is a valuable relic from around the 14th century.
