1501-79 (Bunki 1-Tensho 7) A Rinzai sect monk during the Warring States period. Also called Kensai. Born as the third son of Inoue Munenobu, a vassal of the Hosokawa clan, he became a disciple of Shin'o Toan of Rokuon-ji Temple and shaved his head and received the precepts at Tenryu-ji Temple. He became the third abbot of Myochi-in within the same temple, and in 1537 (Tenbun 6) he went to Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture) at the invitation of Ouchi Yoshitaka, and served as a deputy envoy on a ship sent to Ming China under the chief envoy Koshinsekiden. In 1538 he left Hakata and traveled to Ming China, returning to Japan in 1540. In 1541 he again entered Ming China as a chief envoy, and returned to Japan in 1542. After returning to Japan, he lived in seclusion at Myochi-in, but was invited by Takeda Shingen to go to Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture) for a time. His book, "Sakuhiko Nyumeiki," is a valuable record for understanding not only the diplomacy of the time but also the customs and culture of the Ming dynasty.
