This fragment is a transcription of the "Sanpo Ekotoba" (The Three Treasures Picture Book), written on mica-printed karakami paper with arabesque patterns and double diamonds, with boundaries drawn on it.
The "Sanpo Ekotoba" is a collection of Buddhist tales written by Minamoto no Tamenori for Princess Takako, the daughter of Emperor Reizei, who had become a nun.
This fragment is from Volume 3 (7) of the scene where Ananda of the Western Court repents. Saiin Temple refers to Junna-in Temple, the posthumous temple of Emperor Junna. After Emperor Junna's death, Empress Masashi became a nun and lived here. After the Empress's death, the temple became a nunnery, but retained the title of Junna-in. This describes the Ananda Repentance that took place in Saiin Temple.
Ananda Repentance is a ritual in which people repent of their sins and misfortunes and pray for happiness, with Ananda as the principal image, in order to repay the kindness of Ananda, who paved the way for women to become nuns.
The "Todaiji-kiri" was cut out from the Important Cultural Property "Sanbo-e" (owned by Nagoya City Museum), also known as the "Sekido-bon Sanbo-e." The source of the name is unknown, but it is said to come from a fragment cut out from the "Sekidohon Sanbo-e" that contained a reference to Todaiji Temple. The colophon of this "Sekido version of the Sanpo-e" reads, "Written and copied on June 7, 1274," making it a valuable relic that allows us to know the date of its transcription.
