Sonnō-jōi activist of the late Edo period. Born in 1835. Head priest of Joren-ji Temple in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). In 1863, he participated in the Tenchu-gumi Incident, but was defeated and fled to Inaba (Tottori Prefecture). In 1868, he attempted an unsuccessful attack on British Minister Parkes in Kyoto. He was captured and executed on March 22nd of the same year. He was 34 years old. Born in Yamato. His given name was Shindo. His Buddhist name was Jōshō. His pen names were Kotsudō and Aoni. His alias was Aoki Seiichiro.
