【Ootsuki Gentaku】1757.9.28~1827.3.30 Dutch doctor and scholar of Dutch medicine in the mid-Edo period. His given name was Shigeshige, his pen name was Shikan, and his pen name was Iwansui. Gentaku was his nickname. He first studied medicine under Takebe Seian, a physician of the Ichinoseki domain in Mutsu Province, and later went to Edo to study Dutch studies under Sugita Genpaku and Maeno Ryotaku. In 1785 (Tenmei 5), he traveled to Nagasaki to study, and the following year returned to Edo to become a physician to the Date clan, lord of the Sendai domain, and opened a Dutch studies school called Shirando. Inspired by his book "The Steps of Dutch Studies" (1788), talented scholars from all over the country gathered at the school, and he became a central figure in the Edo Dutch studies world at the Shingenkai (Dutch New Year) celebrations. In 1811 (Bunka 8), when a bureau for the reconciliation of foreign books was established at the Shogunate's Tenmonkata, he became a translator assisting Baba Sajuro Sadayoshi, and worked on translating Chomel's Encyclopedia ("Kosei Shinpen"). He has translated many books, including "Iyoi Shinsho," "Kaitai Shinsho (Revised Edition)," and "Kankai Ibun (Ibun of the Sea)."
