A renga poet and haiku poet from the early Edo period. The founder of Danrin Haikai. A native of Yatsushiro, Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture). Initially a samurai, he later became a ronin when his master's estate was abolished. He went to Kyoto and studied under Satomura Shotaku, and at the age of 43, became the head master of the renga studio at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. He also became familiar with haikai from an early age, influenced by people such as Sadamon Shigeyori, but from the end of the Kanbun era to the beginning of the Enpo era, people who came together under Soin's free and innovative haikai formed the "Danrin Haikai" school, which became popular throughout the country. However, in his later years he distanced himself from haikai, before returning to his passion for renga. His works include "Seiou 100 Verses," "Seiyama Soin Shakukyo Haikai," and "Soin 500 Verses." Keicho 10 - Tenwa 2 (1605-1682)
