During the Muromachi period, many short stories with fantastical and moralistic themes, known as Otogi-zoshi, were created, and were passed down as picture scrolls and picture books up until the Edo period. Nezumi-zoshi is one of them. The protagonist is a rat named Gon-nokami who lives in Shijo Horikawa, Kyoto.
He prayed at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, hoping to marry a human woman and save his descendants from the realm of animals, and he met a beautiful woman and the two were married.The woman got married to Gon-nokami without realizing that he was a Rat, but one day she realized his true nature and left the house.
Gon-nokami spends his days crying every time he sees the teacups and hair ornaments used by the woman.Realizing that this wasn't good enough, he decided to become a monk and head to Mount Koya to train.
Along the way, the Mouse met the Cat Gobo and thought that this was the end, but the Cat Gobo replied that he was over 100 years old and no longer had the energy to eat mice. The Mouse and the Cat then climbed Mt. Koya together to train. The end.
Unlike the serious story world of the Heian period, Otogi-zoshi are characterized by their humorous endings.
