A Confucian scholar of the Neo-Confucian school in the early Edo period. His first name was Fang, later Gong, his pen name was Doen, and his pen name was Katsusho. A native of Harima, he initially received a stipend from the Kumamoto domain, but later served Tokugawa Yorinobu, the lord of the Kishu domain, and became Yorinobu's ideological brain. He was a leading disciple of Fujiwara Seika, and was known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Fuji school, along with Hayashi Razan and others. Katsusho's Confucian thought gradually moved away from Neo-Confucianism and closer to Yangmingism, placing emphasis on law and admonition.
