Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) commissioned the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra in the form of a publication record as a memorial for his late father, Sadauji.According to "Jorakuji Soran," it took several months to carve one volume, and four to five volumes were produced in a year. The record of the publication of the book, which was a long-cherished wish of Ashikaga Takauji, is printed in volume 11, but the book was not completed during Takauji's lifetime, and it is believed that only about 10 volumes were completed during his lifetime. The Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, which was completed through a 54-year carving project from 1356 to 1410, is called the "Chikan edition." Chikan was invited to the project because he had been involved in the Kasuga edition of the sutra, which had stalled during the time of Motouji.Chikan used the long-cherished wish of Takauji and Motouji (who inherited Takauji's wish and made a vow to publish the book in 1262) as a justification to form ties with them and seek help in order to support the stability of the Ashikaga family and the shogunate system.
The project to publish the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra, which was started by Takauji in the 1300s, required an enormous amount of work, materials, and financial resources, and was not completed during his lifetime. However, when the project was taken over by Motouji, fundraising continued with the involvement of Chikan, and the project took 54 years, ultimately resulting in the publication of just over 500 volumes, which were left unfinished.
