A very large and splendid hanging scroll
Calligrapher. Born in Hikone, Omi. His given name was Tosaku and his pen name was Shiyo. He was adopted by Kusakabe Saburoemon, a samurai of the Hikone domain, but his father died in the Sakuradamon Incident. In 1869 (Meiji 2), he moved to Tokyo and became Grand Secretary of the Grand Council of State, but later made a living as a calligrapher. He initially studied the calligraphy style of Maki Ryoko, but in 1880, under the influence of Yang Shoujin, who visited Japan, he studied Six Dynasties calligraphy. He later traveled to Qing China to broaden his horizons, and his profound knowledge and noble personality made his calligraphy a sensation. His achievements as a pioneer in the development of modern calligraphy are highly regarded.
