1569-1633 A monk from the Azuchi-Toyotomi to early Edo periods. Born in 1669. Rinzai sect. Succeeded in the teachings of Seishuku Tokurin at Konchi-in, Nanzen-ji Temple, Kyoto, and became the abbot of the temple in 1605 (Keicho 10). Served Tokugawa Ieyasu, he was involved in diplomatic affairs, the Hoko-ji bell inscription incident, temple and shrine administration, drafting various laws, the suppression of Christianity, and the Purple Robe Incident, contributing to the foundation of the shogunate. He was known as the Black Robed Chancellor. Founder of Konchi-in Temple in Edo. Died on January 20, 1625, aged 65. His secular surname was Isshiki. He was commonly known as Konchi-in Suden. His posthumous name was Ensho Honko Kokushi. His works include "Ikoku Nikki" and "Honkou Kokushi Goroku."
