[Kaga Chiyoni] A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Also known as Chiyo, Chiyonami, Soen, and Kaga Chiyo. A native of Matsuto, Kaga. Born the daughter of a paperhanger, at the age of 17, her talent was recognized by Shiko during a pilgrimage in Hokuetsu, and she became known throughout the country. She was friends with Shiko and other Mino school haiku poets. She shaved her head around 1753 and took the name Soen. Her biography contains many legendary parts. Her haiku style was common and well-liked. Her haiku collections include "Chiyo-ni Kushu."
