Full-scale mining at Ikuno Silver Mine in Tajima Province began in 1542 (Tenbun 11), and thereafter flourished as a mine directly controlled by the rulers of each era.It was the first model mine to be government-run by the new Meiji government in order to establish the modernization of Japan's mining industry, and is one of Japan's leading silver mines.
This work depicts scenes from the Edo period, and begins with a description of the traditional New Year's ceremonies held by the mine owner, followed by detailed descriptions of each mine, mining and ore dressing, refining at Fukiya, and trading of the ore, providing detailed descriptions of the process of extracting silver and the people who worked there.The end of the scroll describes the journey to Osaka to pay tribute.
The depiction is detailed and the colors are rich. Some parts use gold leaf.It is considered to be a particularly outstanding work among those depicting Ikuno Silver Mine.
