It was commissioned by Emperor Shotoku to quell the unrest following the rebellion of Emi no Oshikatsu (Fujiwara no Nakamaro) in 764, and was completed in 770.Initially, 100,000 were placed at each of the ten major temples, including Daian-ji and Todai-ji, but currently only the one that was passed down to Horyuji remains. This national project is recorded in the Shoku Nihongi, which states that it took five years and eight months to complete and involved 157 engineers. The Dharani is the oldest surviving printed material in Japan with a clear date of production, making it extremely valuable.
It is also important to note that the box contains an inscription from Saeki Sadatane, who served as the chief priest of Horyuji Temple and the head of the Hosso sect of Buddhism.
