The Fugen Enmei figure is depicted in two forms: with two arms and with twenty arms. The former is associated with the Tendai sect, while the latter is linked to the Shingon sect. As this image represents the latter type with twenty arms, it was likely crafted as a representation of the Shingon esoteric Buddhist tradition.
Fugen Bodhisattva is a bodhisattva representing the principles and aspirations of all Buddhas, and Fugen Enmei Bodhisattva is the esoteric Buddhist form of Fugen Bodhisattva, and is the principal image of the Fugen Enmeiho, which prays for an extension of lifespan and increased benefits. Originally, the significance of Enmeiho was that longevity increased the chances of attaining Buddhahood in this very body, but over time, prayers for longevity itself came to be seen as a purpose, and it is said to have been widely performed in the Imperial Palace and the residences of nobles.
Four white elephants, each with one of the Four Heavenly Kings atop its head, stand on a lotus pedestal. Seated on a lotus throne above the elephants is a figure wearing a five-buddha crown on his head and holding ritual implements, swords, and other items in his 20 hands. His flesh is depicted as white, with a pale pink halo in parts of his arms, further enhancing the impressive movements of his fleshy arms and supple fingers.
