【Emperor Kokaku】1771-1840: Mid-to-late Edo period, 119th Emperor. Reigned 1780*-1817.
Born on August 15, 8th year of the Meiwa era. He succeeded to the throne at the age of 9 when Emperor Go-Momozono, who had no sons, died suddenly without choosing an heir. He reigned for 38 years, and after abdicating, ruled as a cloistered emperor for 23 years. In 1894, he attempted to bestow the title of Retired Emperor on his father, Norihito, but was thwarted by the senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu (title incident). He was fond of waka poetry and music. He died on November 19th, 11th year of the Tenpo era, at the age of 70.
