These folk paintings were sold in the Otani and Oiwake towns along the Tokaido road from around the Kan'ei era of the early Edo period (first half of the 17th century). The subjects featured included Buddhist paintings such as Shomen Kongo, as well as secular paintings such as Fuji Musume, Oni Nembutsu, and Gourd Catfish. Later, Otsu-e paintings with accompanying moral songs appeared, and a popular belief emerged that Oni Nembutsu was effective in soothing babies' nighttime cries. Because they became popular as souvenirs, they were mass-produced, with the outlines traced on a raincoat and the details hand-colored. They were sold as single sheets or in simple bindings with a thin bamboo stem attached to a painted frame.
