伝称筆者の後宇多天皇は第九十一代天皇。
中世日本最高の賢帝の一人とされ、対立する持明院統の花園天皇からも「末代の英主」と称えられた。
その政治改革は後醍醐天皇の建武政権を通して室町幕府の政策にも影響を与えている。
好学の天皇であり、書道では宸翰様の名手としても知られ、『後宇多天皇宸翰御手印遺告』（大覚寺蔵）など数点の書作品が国宝に指定されている。また、和歌にも優れ、二条派の有力歌人の一人。
本作は「宸翰様の名手」の名の通り、余白を充分に生かした雄大且つ堂々たる書風を示している。
【読み】
霜草欲枯虫思苦
風枝未定鳥栖難
今来むと誰頼めけむ秋の夜を
明かしかねつつ松虫の鳴く
霜にあたった草は枯れようとしていて、虫の思いは哀切である。
風に揺れる枝は落ち着かず、鳥が棲むのは難しい。
「今に来てくれるだろう」といったい誰が頼みにさせたのか、秋の夜を明かしかねて松虫が鳴いている。
