Emperor Go-Uda was the 91st emperor of Japan. Regarded as one of the wisest emperors of medieval Japan, he was praised as "the last great ruler of the era" by his rival, Emperor Hanazono of the Jimyoin lineage. His political reforms, through the Kenmu administration of Emperor Godaigo, influenced the policies of the Muromachi shogunate. The emperor was a scholar and known for his mastery of calligraphy, with several of his works designated as National Treasures, including "Go-Uda Emperor's Shinkan Ontein Ikoku" (owned by Daikaku-ji Temple). He was also skilled in waka poetry, and was one of the leading poets of the Nijo school. As befits his reputation as a "master of the Shinkan style," this work displays a majestic and dignified style that makes ample use of white space.

霜草欲枯虫思苦
風枝未定鳥栖難
今来むと誰頼めけむ秋の夜を
明かしかねつつ松虫の鳴く
霜にあたった草は枯れようとしていて、虫の思いは哀切である。
風に揺れる枝は落ち着かず、鳥が棲むのは難しい。
「今に来てくれるだろう」といったい誰が頼みにさせたのか、秋の夜を明かしかねて松虫が鳴いている。
