[Zeniya Gohei] A wealthy merchant from Kaga in the late Edo period. For generations, he was involved in soy sauce manufacturing and pawnbroking, but he also started a shipping business and engaged in trade with Matsumae and the Tohoku region. During the Tenpo period (1830-1844), he became a privileged merchant in the Kanazawa domain during the Tenpo Reforms, and made great strides in the shipping business and rice market. He is said to have owned more than 200 ships. In his later years, he was arrested along with his family for the failure of the Kahokugata reclamation project, and died in prison.
