The letter was addressed to Fukazawa Toshishige, lord of Sakado Castle and a retainer of the Uesugi clan, and its contents suggest it was written during the Otate War of 1578 (Tensho 6).
The letter inquires about the situation at Sarugakyo in Ueno. It asks whether a request for reinforcements has been received, and advises that even if reinforcements are sent, no dangerous actions should be taken. During the Otate War, Fukazawa Toshishige was in charge of guarding the Joetsu border in preparation for the Hojo clan moving to support Kagetora (上杉景虎).
