He was a prominent merchant and tea ceremony master during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, hailing from Sakai. He was the son of Tsuda Sōtatsu, a member of the "Thirty-Six Merchants' Guild," and studied tea ceremony under Takeno Jōō. He, along with Sen no Rikyū and Imai Sōkyū, were known as the "Three Great Masters of the Tea Ceremony." His "Tsuda Sōgyū Tea Ceremony Diary" still exists.
