A literati painter of the late Edo period. His given name was Hitoshi and his pen name was Atsufū. His pen names included Takukadō and Chinzan. He lived in Ushitenjin, Koishikawa, Edo. He was a police officer in the shogunate's spear unit and studied painting under Kaneko Jinling. After Jinling's death, he studied under his senior student, Watanabe Kazan. He later incorporated the tradition of colored flower and bird painting, continued by Xu Chongsi, Yun Nantian, and Zhang Qiugu from the Ming to Qing dynasties, and perfected his own style. He also continued and developed portrait painting, Kazan's specialty. He was a central figure in the movement to pardon Kazan, who was arrested in the Bansha no Goku Incident (1839), and provided strong support for his family after Kazan's death. Kazan's second son, Koka, studied under Chinzan and became a painter himself.
