A letter of instruction from Tokugawa Ienari to Oku. It stipulates that all laws must be followed, that women are not allowed to enter without a promissory note, that women who sneak in are not allowed to be entertained, that the wife is not allowed to file lawsuits, that good conduct must be observed, and that fire safety must be taken into consideration. Takahashi Yoemon, one of the people addressed, was appointed as a servant to Lady Eihime in March of the same year. Ienari's 26th daughter, Eihime (Kenko), married Hitotsubashi Narinari in November of the same year, and this document is thought to have been written at the Goshuden (a private palace within the domain's residence).
【Tokugawa Ienari】 He was the 11th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate. He was the son of Hitotsubashi Harusada, a member of the Three Nobles. In 1781, he was adopted by the 10th Shogun, Ieharu, and succeeded him to the position of Shogun in 1786. Immediately after assuming his position, he had his guardian, Matsudaira Sadanobu, and others carry out the Kansei Reforms, but after Sadanobu retired, discipline became corrupted and samurai morals became significantly decadent. Even after abdicating to Ieyoshi in 1837, he continued to hold power, a period commonly referred to as the Ogosho era (Ogosho politics). During his reign, the Bunka-Bunsei era saw the shogunate's finances becoming increasingly strained due to the privatization of the shogunate by his close aides. However, it was also a time when townspeople culture flourished in Edo.
