Influenced by Western paintings that were brought to Nagasaki, an open port city, Western-style paintings known as Komō-ga (Red-haired paintings) and Ran-ga (Random paintings) were produced in large numbers.
This painting has been said to be the work of Araki Jogen (1765-1824), one of the leading Western-style painters from Nagasaki. Based on the origins of the previous owner, it is believed to have been brought to Nagasaki.
This drawing is almost the same size and design as the celestial chart at the top of the left panel of the "Scenes of the Four Continents and Figures of the Forty-Eight Countries" (owned by Kobe City Museum). The originals of both maps are the "Falk Wall Maps".
