Tanaka Shinbi (1875-1975 , 田中親美) Replica of Hon'ami Koetsu (本阿弥光悦)
Ink on Paper of various colors , Elegant color painting
Scroll / Makimono
Accessory : wood box
This is a copy of the Hon'ami Koetsu Waka Scroll by Tanaka Shinbi. The paper, sketch, and calligraphy were all produced by Tanaka Shinbi. Other well-known copies by Tanaka Shinbi include the Heike Nokyo and the Nishi Honganji Thirty-six Poets Collection, but it is extremely rare for a copy of Koetsu like this one to appear on the market.
The seal of "Paper Master Souji" on the spine of the paper has also been reproduced. At the end of the scroll is the signature "Sugawara Chikami" in gold letters, with a gold seal by "Shine." From the colophon we learn that six copies were produced.
The paulownia wood box containing this work is marked "Kanshiso Collection," suggesting that it may have been formerly owned by businessman Ogura Fusazo.
