Suganuma Sadakatsu was originally a local lord in Mikawa, and served the Imagawa, Matsudaira, and Takeda clans. He later served Matsudaira Hideyasu in Echizen, and this letter is thought to date from around that time. The addressee, Wakebe Sakyo, is likely Wakebe Mitsuyoshi or his son Mitsunobu from Ueno, Ise. The letter informs us that Beppu Kuemon, a member of the Wakebe household, has achieved unparalleled fame in the army of the Echizen Shosho (Matsudaira Hideyasu or Tadanao).
