1809-1858: A feudal lord in the late Edo period. Born September 28, 1818. The eldest son of Shimazu Narioki. In 1851 (Kaei 4), he became the 11th head of the Shimazu clan, lord of the Satsuma-Kagoshima domain. He established the domain-run Factory Shuseikan, and promoted policies to encourage industry and enrich the country and strengthen its military. He made his adopted daughter, Atsuhime (Tenshoin), the wife of Shogun Tokugawa Iesada, and strengthened his influence in the shogunate. In the issue of the Shogunal succession, he used Saigo Takamori and others to promote the campaign to support Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu, but died suddenly on July 16, 1858. He was 50 years old. His original name was Tadakata. He was commonly known as Matasaburo. His pen names were Korekata and Rinshu.
