【Andō Seiku】Calligrapher. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Also known as Seiro and Baisetsu. While teaching, he aspired to become a calligrapher, and in his late 20s he studied kanji under Kondo Setsuku (1863-1928), a disciple of Kusakabe Meikaku. He studied kana on his own, seeking out the model of the representative ancient calligraphy of the Heian period, Neihahon Wakan Roeishu. He later founded the kana calligraphy research journal Kana Uta, and after World War II he presided over Seihitsu, working hard to popularize kana calligraphy. His pure beauty of kana, backed by the classics, garnered much support, and he played an active role as a leading figure in the kana calligraphy world. He is a member of the Japan Art Academy. His three-volume model, Baisetsu Kanacho, and his three-volume book, The Beauty of Classical Kana, are both published.
