1893-1983 Calligrapher of the Taisho and Showa periods. Born August 19, 1893. Studied kanji under Kondo Setsuku, then taught himself ancient kana calligraphy, and in 1925 formed the Seihitsu-kai with Kuwata Sasafune and others. In 1929 he launched the journal Kana Uta. After the war he presided over Seihitsu and worked to popularize kana calligraphy. In 1961 he received the Academy of Arts Award, and in 1980 was made a Person of Cultural Merit. He passed away on March 3, 1983, at the age of 89. He was from Hyogo Prefecture and graduated from Himeji Normal School. His real name was Masaro, and his other pen name was Baisetsu. His works include The Beauty of Classical Kana and Seiku Hyakunin Isshu.
