Ono Ranzan (1729-1810) was a botanist of the late Edo period. Born in Kyoto in 1729, he studied botany under Matsuoka Joan (Gentatsu). He opened the Shuhoken school in Kyoto and later moved to Edo to teach botany at the Medical School. He then traveled around the country by order of the shogunate, traveling to discover medicines, and compiled his findings in the "Medicinal Records."
In the letter from Ranzan at the top of the image, there are references to volumes 14 and 15, suggesting that the work of publishing the book was underway, and judging from the number of volumes, this is likely Ranzan's masterpiece, "The Compendium of Materia Medica, 48 Volumes." Incidentally, the publisher of the reprint in 1829 listed Kitajima Junshiro of Edo Shoshi, who may be related to Kitajima Kisuke, the addressee of this letter.
Ioka Rei (1778-1837), who wrote the inscription, was also a botanist. As a disciple of Ono Ranzan, he also left his mark as a scribe of works such as Yamato Honzo Pisei.
It is also noteworthy that this work was formerly owned by Shirai Mitsutaro, a pioneer of plant pathology and botanist in Japan. The Shirai Collection (held at the National Diet Library) is the largest collection of pharmacopoeia literature in Japan.
