A letter from Nagao Tamekage, a Sengoku period lord from Echigo. Judging from Tamekage's signature and other factors, it was likely issued between September 1540 and December 1541.
Not much is known about the addressee, Nakajo Shinshichiro, but he is thought to have been a member of the same family as Nakajo Fujisuke, who later served as the chief vassal of Tamekage's son, Nagao Kagetora (Kenshin).
It is rare for letters from Nagao Tamekage to come to light, making this a rare find
【Nagao Tamekage】A military commander of the Sengoku period. Son of Nagao Yoshikage. After his father's death, he became Shugodai in 1507 (Eisho 4). He rallied various generals within the province, expelled Shugo Uesugi Fusanobu, and supported Sadazane as Shugo. He also won a conflict with Fusanobu's brother, Kanrei Uesugi Akisada, becoming the de facto ruler of Echigo. He spent his life fighting against the Shugo faction within the province and allied with the Hatakeyama clan to fight the Etchu Ikko Ikki uprising. The shogunate granted him the same status as a Shugo daimyo. However, Tamekage was not successful in becoming a Sengoku daimyo during his lifetime, and he repeatedly clashed with powerful local lords within the country who disliked his growing power (the Kyoroku-Tenbun Wars). In his later years, he handed over the family headship to his eldest son, Harukage, and assumed the role of guardian, but he died without ever being able to take control of the entire Echigo province.
