Examples of this type of black seal letter are known to have been issued between Tensho 9(1581) and Keicho 18(1613), and this letter is thought to date from that period.
The letter expressed gratitude for the gift of Hassaku oranges.
【Mogami Yoshiaki】
1546-1614 A military commander and feudal lord in the early Edo period. Born in Tenbun 15. Lord of Yamagata Castle in Dewa. He won the civil war with his clan and the local lords, and ruled over half of Dewa province in opposition to his nephew, Date Masamune. In the Battle of Sekigahara, he joined the Eastern Army and fought against Naoe Kanetsugu of the Uesugi clan in Dewa. After the war, he was granted additional lands in the Shonai region and Yuri district, becoming the first head of the Mogami clan to rule Yamagata domain. 570,000 koku. Died on January 18, 1614, aged 69.
