【Mogami Yoshiaki】A military commander from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period. Lord of Yamagata Castle in Dewa Province. Fighting against his father Yoshimori, he nearly conquered the Yamagata Basin by 1584 (Tensho 12). He also sought to expand into the Shonai region, defeating Daihoji Yoshiuji in 1583 and Daihoji Yoshioki in 1587, but was defeated in 1588 and failed to achieve his goal. In the Dewa War, which was linked to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), he faced an offensive by Uesugi Kagekatsu's forces, but escaped the crisis with the help of his nephew Date Masamune's forces. As a reward after the war, he came to own almost the entire area of present-day Yamagata Prefecture.
