【Matsumura Gekkei / Gosyun】A mid-Edo period painter from Owari. His surname was Matsumura and he was known as Gekkei, but in 1782 he changed his surname to Kure and his given name to Shun. He studied painting and haiku poetry under Yosa Buson, and showed his individuality in his Nanga paintings, with their flexible brushwork. After Buson's death, he studied under Maruyama Okyo and switched to realistic painting. He established a style of painting that was approachable, rich in elegance and emotion, and was welcomed by the people of Kyoto. He lived in Shijo Higashinotoin and is considered the founder of the Maruyama-Shijo school. His representative works include the Willow Heron and Flock of Birds Screen.
