Businessman and head clerk of the Mitsui zaibatsu. Born in Sado. After the Meiji Restoration, he ran a trading company in Yokohama, but in 1873 he became the Tokyo head office of the Senshu Kaisha (Senshu Company) founded by Inoue Kaoru, and became president when Mitsui & Co. was founded in 1876. He opposed Nakagamigawa Hikojiro's industrialism by advocating commercialism, but contributed to the formation and development of the Mitsui zaibatsu through the sale of the Miike Coal Mine and other means. He founded the Commercial Law Training Institute. He went by the name Donno and was also known as a tea master and art lover.
